Catechist Marie Bodin at Shoemaker, New Mexico
Catechist Marie Bodin and an unidentified Catechist are with their students at Shoemaker, New Mexico (left). This is just one of the many communities that the early Catechists visited that are difficult to locate on a map today. Many of the small communities that the Catechists ministered to have disappeared through the years. Some of the communities were located by a source of water, but were bypassed by the railroads and major highways with the arrival of the automobile. Shoemaker is located in Mora County in northern New Mexico. Notice in the left slide that all of the girls are either wearing a hat or bonnet and the boys are holding on to their hats. In the one to the right most of the students are wearing a hat or cap. This is their protection from the hot New Mexican sun. Also notice the number of students in both slides. It was not uncommon for the size to vary from session to session or year to year.
